For clarification:

If you are currently on any Build stage prior or equal  April 2011 CU, please perform the update as follows:

  1. Install the SP1 packages for SharePoint Foundation on all Servers in Farm
  2. Install the according Language packs (if applicable) on all Servers in Farm
  3. Install the SP1 packages for SharePoint Server on all Servers in Farm
  4. Install the according Language packs (if applicable) on all Servers in Farm for each languge installed!
  5. Install the Office Web Apps SP1 (if applicable)
  6. Install the SharePoint Foundation June 2011 CU on top on on all Servers in Farm
  7. Install the SharePoint Server June 2011 CU on top on on all Servers in Farm

The SharePoint 2010 Products Configuration Wizard or “psconfig –cmd upgrade –inplace b2b -wait” should be run once on every server in the farm following the final update installed.

Q:
What, if I have Project server, Office web apps, other lnaguages installed all in same farm?

A:
See this post here for all according information and the Install order for several scenarios:
http://blogs.technet.com/b/office_resource_kit/archive/2011/07/12/patching-office-web-apps-to-sp1-and-june-cus-including-sharepoint-server-2010.aspx

Q:
Is it true that installing only the server packages would be sufficient as they contain the foundation packages anyway?

A:
We recommend installing the SharePoint Foundation 2010 packages followed by the SharePoint Server 2010 packages to ensure all binaries are properly updated as a best practice
however, Server packages will include the Foundation package so they could be installed independently.
The June CU does not include all of the files included in Service Pack 1 so should be installed following Service Pack 1.  In order to ensure everything is up to date, you will need to install both packages.

*** End Update 2011-07-29 ***

Please vsiit also the Post from Jie Li, “The Mystery Behind SharePoint 2010 Patching” it will clarify some more questions about the patching mechanism.

Important   [Taken from the “Updates for SharePoint 2010 Products” blog]

  • After you install Service Pack 1 you must run the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard (PSConfigUI.exe) to run upgrade which will update the farm to the latest version. This step is required in order to have full SharePoint functionality. If you do not run PSConfigUI the farm will run, but with reduced capacity. For example, Search will not be able to index content.
  • You must restart the User Profile Synchronization service after installing Service Pack 1. For more information see the Start the User Profile Synchronization service section in the Configure profile synchronization article in the library.

Known Issues after installing SP1

After installing SP1, if you modify a grouped view (or create a new grouped view) a javascript error occurs, pointing to the core.js :

Message: ‘g_ExpGroupXSLTQueue’ is undefined
Line: 1
Char: 31898
Code: 0

Result:
You cannot view records anymore.

When you change back the display language to “english”, the views are working as expected.

Resolution
This regression has been fixed in the August 2011 CU

Additional information regarding SP1:

Ecerpt from the Office Sustained Engineering and Release Team of the first Service Pack:

SP1 releases for both Office client suites and SharePoint server products will be made available. All language versions of SP1 will release simultaneously. Initially, Service Pack 1 will be offered as a manual download from the Download Center and from Microsoft Update, and no sooner than 90 days after release, will be made available as an Automatic Update.

SP1 will include many interesting changes. Across the client suites and server products, SP1 offers a sprinkling of improvements to make a strong 2010 release wave even stronger. During TechEd and beyond, teams on http://blogs.office.com will update their blogs with more specific details of 2010 Service Pack 1 contents.

There are far too many changes in SP1 to list here, but the list below is a sample of SP1 highlights to get things started. This is a list of things that you can do now that you couldn’t before, or things that are just better than they were with the original release:

  • Outlook fixes an issue where “Snooze Time” would not reset between appointments.
  • The default behavior for PowerPoint “Use Presenter View” option changed to display the slide show on the secondary monitor.
  • Integrated community content in the Access Application Part Gallery.
  • Better alignment between Project Server and SharePoint Server browser support.
  • Improved backup / restore functionality for SharePoint Server
  • The Word Web Application extends printing support to “Edit Mode.”
  • Project Professional now synchronizes scheduled tasks with SharePoint task lists.
  • Internet Explorer 9 “Native” support for Office Web Applications and SharePoint
  • Office Web Applications Support for Chrome
  • Inserting Charts into Excel Workbooks using Excel Web Application
  • Support for searching PPSX files in Search Server
  • Visio Fixes scaling issues and arrowhead rendering errors with SVG export
  • Proofing Tools improve spelling suggestions in Canadian English, French, Swedish and European Portuguese.
  • Outlook Web Application Attachment Preview (with Exchange Online only)
  • Office client suites using “Add Remove Programs” Control Panel,  building on our work from Office 2007 SP2

Each product in Office and each Server capability area will have changes in SP1. Specific changes will be detailed on TechNet and in KB Articles. On release day, we will publish all associated KB articles on this blog for reference.

As we have discussed in prior blog posts, SP1 will also roll-up our Public Update and Cumulative Update releases to date. SP1 will include all of these fixes, and represent a milestone in the support lifecycle of Office and SharePoint 2010 versions. Below is the list of fixes to date for 2010 products.
