Good news! SharePoint and Office 2010 Service pack 2 are now available!
NOTE!
From a recent comment (see bottom of the page), Installing SP2 straight on Top of RTM might work BUT may cause a Problem with the JUNE 2013 CU in relation to the SP1 install!
Therefore I’d highly recommend to follow this install Order:
- Based on RTM, Install the SP1 first!
- Now install the JUNE 2013 CU !! (corrected, since it will not install on top of SP2!)
- then install the SP2
Don’t forget to run each time the PSConfig Wizard to complete the update sequence!
Q: Can I install SP2 straight ahead on top of RTM?
A: Yes, you can.
Q: Does SP2 contains SP1?
A: Yes, SP2 is cumulative and contains SP1 as well
Q: Can I install June 2013 Cu after I have applied SP2?
A: No. There was a recently reported isuse that this may fail and therefore June 2013 CU must be installed after SP1 and before SP2.
Small hint:
If you have already installed either SP2 on top of RTM or SP1 and SP2 but not June 2013 CU and/or having now Problems with installing June 2013 CU afterwards, just wait until August 2013 CU gets released and install that one.

Hi, One of my Front end server cannot be upgraded after installing the service pack 2. it said that upgrade object is too new.

Hello Hendy,
not sure whats wrong with it but you can try to just “disconnect” the WFE from farm, then retry the update by adding it back to farm via PSCOnfig Wizard GUI if SP2 binaries are all installed correctly. Otherwise you could try to install another CU later than your current but before SP2 version build while WFE is still disconnected and then retry to add it back to farm.

i am installing SharePoint 2010 SP2 on sql server 2012 and windows server 2008 R2. I installed pre-requisites of sharepoint, i got an error with native client "installation of SQL Server 2008 native client failed bcause a higher version already exists
on the machine. to proceed, uninstall the higher version and then run SQL Server 2008 native client again"…so is it any harm if uninstall SQL server 2012 native client and install SQL server 2008 native client ?

Could not access the Search database. A generic error occurred while trying to access the database to obtain the schema version info.

and even after 12 hours of create-spsearchservice application powershell script, it failed to create a search serv appln.
i tried to stop the search service and it also failed.
Seems the native client issue exists on my machine as well.
Should i install a native client for this? and install it and run on the SP server? my customer doesnt want to do any suicidal task hence they are telling me to double check to confirm from MS team before uninstalling and installing the sql native client.
If i uninstall sql native client, will my current env. will lose all the existing data ?

I am trying to slipstream SP2 into Office 2010 Pro Plus on our MDT server. Once applied, Windows update shows that I still need Service Pack 1. Do I need to slipstream the August CU as well? Anyone have any ideas?

all the information and the best known update order is already descirbed in my post, please review the "Note" sections for it 😉
As always, you're good to go with a full backup before any update deployment! Also please note down any Special configs and cusimzations you have applied just to be sure you can recover it if soemthing goes very bad.
If you still dont feel convinient, you also may raise a Support Case with MS Support to guide you through all steps (Case type: advisory, requires proactive hours contract!)

Have you tried the install with the builtin Administrator account or runing it with "Run as…"?
Do you have an Internet Connection while running the Setup? If not, please use the offline file version of the prerequistes and retry.
Else, try to install the "Application Server Role, Web Server (IIS) Role" and verify IIS is runnign and active before running the Setup form your ISO.
If still Errors are preventing the install, pelase raise a MS SUpport ticket to investigate further for any issues with the slipstreamed package.

So, our licensing group downloaded from the customer support download site an iso executable called SW_DVD5_SharePoint_Server_2010w_SP2_64Bit_English_MLF_X19-11933.ISO
The description at the support site was that this was SharePoint Server 2010 Enterprise with SP2 applied.
I mounted the .iso and started the default.hta.
I started the prerequisites install, but ran into this error:
"The tool was unable to install Application Server Role, Web Server (IIS) Role."
The error log shows the step reaching the powershell run on Pre77E2.tmp.PS1, and then a long list of the message

After installing the June CU and running the PSConfig command, followed by SP2, the server did not indicate that I needed to update the SharePoint databases again since the command (get-spserver $env:computername).NeedsUpgrade gave the output 'FALSE'. Indeed, when I ran PSConfig anyway, it went through the motions very quickly with no indication that anything was updated. Can you confirm that this is the correct behaviour?

thanks for your time to answer my question. We have installed the problem server a second time. Now we install first the SP1 then the CU2013 (the right one) and then SP2 because this works for us on another server.
Thanks also for the hint with the wrong CU, but we have really the right version from July, so this was not the problem. 😦
Because this was a blank installation and also a testsystem we have no restorepoints for this, but we have perfect install scripts, so that the blank installation of the sharepoint server is not so time spending.

first of all thanks for your blog and the informations about SP2 an CU June 2013. We have a little problem here with installing the CU on SP2 SharePoint 2010.
So here comes the history of the server installation:
1. blank installation of Sharepoint 2010
2. installation of SP2 directly without SP 1 or the CU June 2013
3. Installation of CU June 2013
The problem is that the installation of the June CU fails because the server say that the version that is needed is not installed. 😦
We have tried somethings here, frirst of all was to start the Cu with the parameter:
PACKAGE.BYPASS.DETECTION.CHECK=1
but this doesn't work.
The second try was to install SP1 after SP2 and this works, but the CU installations failes with the same Error.
So by now we have tested the installation of the cu on a nother system in this direction:
1. Install SP1
2. Install CU June 2013
3. Install SP2
This works, but the problme with the first server is that we could not deinstall the SP2 package. 😦
Are there any ideas from you to this problem?

According to what I read SP2 includes SP1. Additionally it has shown up on my Windows Update already as an optional update [if I remember right].

afaik, the last major change to FIM was with installing June 2011 CU upgraded to version 4.0.2450.34. Having a look on the technical details for SP2 (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2687524),
there is none of the Microsoft.office.server.userprofiles*.* nor miis*.* files in it, hence it seems that there wasn’t a change.

Sorry, I’m afraid I don’t understand your question. A service pack includes all CU’s from the previous releases. So if you have installed SP2, then the CU’s up to that point more or less are all included. If Windows update still keeps saying SP1 is needed, then simply reboot the machine and check again.

With regard to the Ordering of the SP2 upgrade it shouldn’t matter which way round you do it …
if you upgrade the SharePoint Application tier servers before or after you upgrade the external FAST Server machine
Also just for info Looking at the published articles the FAST4SP2010 SP2 package is included in the main SP2010 SP2 package

Hi paramesh, sorry for the late response,
while SharePoint 2010 was built, it was based and expected to run on its correlated SQL server version. Hence it needs on prereq check the expected SQL server native client which is the SQL server 2008. You can uninstall the SQL server native client and reinstall
the expected one, reboot and then reaply a setup of SQL 2012 to get the additional native client installed on top. that should work but I haven’t tested it sine I always used to have a separate SQL box for all my test Vm’s.

The June 2013 CU is NOT included in the SP1 release and is a Post-SP1 CU that requires SP1 to be installed Prior to the CU.
The SP2 contains all the Cumulative Updates (CU) and Public Updates (PU) that have released since SP1, starting with the June 2011 CU and July 2011 PU and ending with the April 2013 CU and May 2013 PU. It does not state, that the SP1 is part of it, so if you have installed SP2 on top of RTM, there is no baseline check and unfortunately, Yes – it can be installed, BUT now the update chain might be corrupted and therefore the June 2013 CU may not fit into the expected product Version check, which then fails to install it.
BTW: Are you sure, that you have downloaded the latest Version of the JUNE 2013 CU?
there was a known issue with the release and although it was removed from download Servers you might have got the broken packages?

What about a "Restore Point" to revert back to the state before installing all updates?Or what about using a backup to restore to the latest Point before update?
The only suggestion I could give you here for the Problem Server is to raise a Support ticket with Microsoft to investigate/Fix your problem with the failed Update setup.

Hi Andrea, a Regular CU for the Server package contains already the foundation package. The Service packs contains all CU's, which in turn answers your question:
– install SP2 Server and the Foundation pack is already included.
So yes, you can go and install the Server SP2 and no Need for the foundation SP2 pack prior or separately

Answer:
I’m not Aware of an issue that will end in the above shown error. Are you sure, that this directly occurred after installing SP2?
– Did you try to "reset to site Definition"?
– Does this error also comes up on a OOB web part?
– did you run the PSConfig wizard afterwards? – Did it complete successful?
– Was this working before?
– DId you apply the SP2 straight ahead of RTM or did you have installed SP1 + June 11 CU in the middle?
Since it is a custom Webpart, you may debug first the customized stuff.
If this also happens on a similar but OOB Webpart, please raise Service request with Microsoft, as we would need to have more Details and data to investigate this further.
I’m Sorry but the postings here are primarily proactive Services and not to be meant to get "Support" via comments. If this can be identifed and proffed as a regression due SP2 then it would be anyway free of Charge for you but without deeper Troubleshooting
such as Log Review, additional data to be requested, etc., I cannot give you any better answer yet.

Are these instructions still current? I am on RTM SharePoint Server 2010 and would like to go up to SP2 and the April 2017 CU. Do I still need to install SP1, then revised June Patch, then SP2 and then the CU for April?

Hi Daniel,
if you are going to download the most recent bits for SP1 and SP2, you should be good to simply just install them one by one. It should be sufficient as you may not need the june patch along with SP1. But to be fully certain that you wont break the update chain, I would recin’ to go the longer path and to follow the instructions with SP1 + June CU, then SP2.
