As many times in our daily business, we’re used to ask for “Build number” rather than “Service Pack or Patch level”. Because of some confusion of the customers and for transparency I’ll provide here a list of the most relevant Build numbers and its related KB Numbers.

Ee721049.note(en-us,office.14).gifNote:
Service Pack 1 for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 retired on July 13, 2010. You must upgrade to Service Pack 2, which is a requirement for all following Cumulative Updates, later than August 2010. Since August 2010 update, the SP2 installed is mandatory! The new update packages are not containing any other hotfixes prior to SP2! You will see this on the smaller sizes of the packages.

Ee721049.note(en-us,office.14).gif Important:
After applying the preceding updates, run the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard as usual or “psconfig –cmd upgrade –inplace b2b -wait” in command line. This needs to be done on every server in the farm with SharePoint installed. For more information on how to install updates for MOSS7WSS, please see here: “All about updating…”

Last Update: 2012-03-14   –>NOTE! This page is no longer maintained!  Please refer to the new page for continued posts of Updates and Cumulatives Here:
http://blogs.technet.com/b/steve_chen/archive/2012/03/14/3486623.aspx

Note!   Updates marked with  )**  are post SP hotfixes, that requires the last prior released Service Pack installed before applying these CU’s!

Note!  Service Pack 2 is mandatory for all later published Cumulative updates since the CU’s does not contain any fixes prior SP2!

Note!  Service Pack 3 contains a roll-up of all cumulative and public updates since SP2 for both Office Client and applications as well as SharePoint Servers, in addition to some new fixes for issues discovered during the lifecycle of SP2!

)* As usually, the according language packs must be installed as well!  The main download contains also the links to the Language pack Service packs. Notice, that you may change the download language to receive the correct package link for the additional LP’s you have installed!

More information and Details about SP3 for WSS and MOSS you can find as well on my blog here: Current Service pack Announcements Oct. 2011  and/or on the blog of my colleague Joerg Sinemus.
Please install the latest cumulative updates always on top of its prior released Service Pack!

Ee721049.note(en-us,office.14).gif What happened to the CU Packages since June 2010 ?

Some of you probably might have noticed that some CU’s are not available anymore:

– June 2010 CU
– August 2010 CU
– October 2010 CU
– December 2010 CU

Due to a series of regressions, these fixes were pulled back to prevent customers from running into problems.

From KB 2276472:
Hotfix information

A recently discovered issue affecting Project plans that contain baselines was fixed and included in the Project Server 2007 February 2011 cumulative update package. This issue was traced back to have originated in the Project Server 2007 April 2010 cumulative update package. As our cumulative updates are incremental, this issue also affected the June, August, October, and December server updates.
We recommend that customers install the latest cumulative update packages that are described in KB953878. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

953878 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/953878/ ) Cumulative updates are available from the Microsoft Office team to fix reported problems

The last CU from February 2011 is recommended as it contains the regression fixes or any other Build, later than Febr. 2011

If you are planning to install a higher patch level than your current, please ensure that you are at least being on SP2 already
and install then on top of this straight away the Febr.CU 2011. or any higher build.

Background Information of Cumulative Update (CU):

Each Cumulative Update will also consist of a package that contains the latest of every hotfix patch that we have shipped. You can apply the latest service pack, the latest WSS Cumulative Update package and the latest MOSS Cumulative Update package and be completely up-to-date.

  • WSS continues to remain separate and is not included in the MOSS package
  • All of the latest Global and Local patches for WSS are in the WSS package
  • All of the latest Global and Local patches for MOSS (Excel Server, Document Life Cycle, etc are part of MOSS), InfoPath Forms Server, Project Server are in the Office Server package
  • The list of what is in the package is an accumulation over time of what we have shipped since RTM
  • The package includes the Infrastructure Update, there is no reason to install it separately.

See also KB 953878 for more information on Cumulative updates and its terms.
